Our check

How we check a used tyre

Plenty of usable tread left — well above the legal minimum.

  2. 2

    Sidewall & bead

No cuts, bulges, cracking or bead damage.

  3. 3

    Age

We read the DOT date and leave old, hardened rubber off the rack.

    Previous repairs

Plugs and patches checked, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Know your tyre

Reading your sidewall

The legal minimum tread depth in South Africa is 1 mm. In the wet, grip drops off long before that, so we recommend replacing tyres at 2–3 mm.

Not sure how much tread you've got left? Pop in and we'll measure it and give you a straight answer.

Look on the side of your tyre for something like:

  2. 2ProfileSidewall height as a percentage of the width.
  3. 3RadialHow the tyre is built. Almost every car tyre is radial.

FAQ

Used tyre questions

Are your used tyres safe?

We check tread depth, sidewalls, the bead and the tyre's age before a used tyre is sold. If we wouldn't put it on our own car, it doesn't go on yours.

Is there a warranty on used tyres?

Ask at the counter and we'll explain exactly what's covered on the tyres you're buying before you pay.

Is fitment and balancing included?

Yes — our quotes normally include fitment and balancing.

Can I buy just one or two?

Yes — singles, pairs or full sets, depending on what's on the rack in your size.

What's the legal minimum tread in South Africa?

1 mm across the tread. For wet-weather grip we recommend replacing at 2–3 mm.
